My recommendations for movie watching this week in L.A. 6/12-19/2015

nightcrawlerON NETFLIX: Writer/director Dan Gilroy’s Nightcrawler is a dark comic look at a sociopath who becomes a videographer for the morning news with the motto, “if it bleeds, it leads”. An incredibly witty and intense performance by Jake Gyllenhaal supported by a strong Renee Russo. One of the best films of 2014.

pickpocketON HULU: People argue over whether Pickpocket, A Man Escaped or Diary of a Country Priest is writer/director Robert Bresson’s best. Well, whatever your decision, Pickpocket is pure Bresson, a man caught in a spiritual/existential crisis as he becomes the title character. Can he find redemption? Made with non-actors, though many sleight of hand artists, it’s a stark, but captivating character study. The inspiration for Paul Schrader’s American Gigolo.
