My recommendations for movie watching this week in L.A. 6/19-25/2015
ON NETFLIX: Writer Bob Nelson and director Alexander Payne gave Bruce Dern a lovely Oscar nominated role in Nebraska, a stark, black and white drama about a son dealing with his father’s early onslaught of Alzheimer’s. Some nice comedy as well as strong performances by Will Forte who plays his son and Oscar nominee June Squib, who is hysterical as the long suffering wife.
ON HULU: In many ways, writer/director Pier Paolo Pasolini’s Momma Roma is little more than a vehicle to show off the great talents of the great Anna Magnani as a prostitute who final earns enough money to go straight, but has trouble bringing her son along with her. Many also see it as a metaphor for Rome itself. At any rate, Magnani is magnificent.
